Poetry Contest and Abstract Sunflower Painting

One of the websites I write for HubPages.com is running a prose and poetry contest this month (November). I submitted an entry titled, Sunshine Filled Yellow Rays an inspirational poem about depression. The poem is dedicated to a dear friend of mine who has been battling clinical depression for years, you can read the inspirational poem at Hubpages. Those of you who are artistically inclined may want to enter the contest the deadline is November 22nd, 12:00pm (PT). If you miss the contest it is still worth joining Hubpages.com you can earn money from articles you publish on any topic and it is a good way to generate income from your creative work. I created an abstract art painting to accompany my poetry contest entry. For the art piece I chose the subject matter of a sunflower for two reasons, I love the brilliant yellow color of sunflowers especially when contrasted against a blue sky and for me the sunflower represents happiness. Here is my abstract sunflower painting.

Large Metal Art African Masks

Those of you who are familiar with my metal artwork may have noticed I tend to make smaller art pieces usually less than 12 by 16 inches. This is not due to a love for miniature art work but more due to the limitations of the metal I work with. Well that all changed in September when I got a commission for a larger art piece. The customer wanted a metal art piece that was at least 18 by 24 inches. So I had to stretch both my creative thinking and metal in order to come up with a piece that was 18 by 24 inches and still aesthetically pleasing. I joined a number of metal art pieces together and the end product was rather delightful. Best of all my customer was pleased with his new art piece. Here is a photo of the completed piece below. It is part of my African Masks collection and is based on my original Fathers Mask art piece.

Evolution of An Artist: from Shadows of Doubt to Fields of Dreams

Today I am celebrating my evolution as an artist. It is always good to examine one's growth over time. I started my creative journey back in 2004. I was working as a consultant back then and never defined myself as an artist. Throughout my high school and college years I leaned towards Economics and the sciences. I never even took art as a subject in high school even though I enjoyed painting and made some rather amateurish attempts back in my teenage years. Then one day in 2004 I just began drawing again I can't explain why or what moved me (see Shadows of Doubt drawing below). My mother loved the art piece which I stuck up on my bedroom wall and suggested I should pursue art more seriously.

In December 2004 my sister Atsango and I were doing Christmas shopping at the museum art gallery and we came across two beautiful metal art pieces, she bought one for herself and one for my brother Solomon and his wife Ina. I fell in love with metal art on that day and I knew I had to learn how to do it. One day while strolling through a shopping centre I saw a sign on the notice board advertising classes in hand-embossed metal art. I excitedly copied down the information and called the artist a Kenyan Asian lady called Taruna. I was her first African student. I discovered that apparently embossed metal art is an ancient tradition in India. From her I learned how to emboss and create images on metal. However, I never did discover what we used to paint the metal because she didn't tell me and she got all her supplies in India. So I spent many years trying to find paint which I could use on the metal (last year after "Googling" I finally discovered it was gold rust liquid). But in between I made a few fascinating discoveries of my own. So I don't use rust liquid to paint my metal art pieces and I have since developed my own metal art techniques. These are images of the first art piece I sold and of one of the new art forms I developed (handmade metal art cards) which are miniature 4 by 4 inch metal art pieces in a card format.

I also started out with a love for oil pastels so once in a while I use those and much as I love the look of oil paint I simply don't have the patience to use it anymore. Just the other day I discovered another new technique using acrylic paints. As they say "Necessity is the mother of invention," I would like to paraphrase that to, "Necessity is the mother of creation." Last week while working on a painting for my sister Laura which is based on my original "Shadows of Doubt," art piece I realized what a long way I have come as an artist. I have developed a variety of art techniques and people who are familiar with my earlier work have acknowledged my growth and best of all I have actually received commissions and praise from people other than my family members :-). Don't get me wrong, I appreciate my family's support especially because many of my family members have great taste in art but the praise of strangers and their art purchases really do make me think at least I can lay claim to been an artist.

I have also sold some of my art gifts on Zazzle and best of all I have actually sold some of my poetry! Now that I consider an accomplishment because poetry is not easy to sell. So I decided that I really must do a blog post celebrating my evolution as an artist and strangely enough when I checked the date I started this blog it was almost two years ago in June 2009. So hoorah for me and thank-you to all of the people who have supported my creative journey over the years. Here's to what I hope will be many more fruitful, creative years!

Art Gifts by Injete, June and July 2011

Of late I have been extremely busy trading currencies and I have neglected my creative pursuits. My muse kept calling and since my fabulous younger sister Sandra was visiting from the States, I decided to do an art piece for her and for my other sister, Laura and brother in law, Ed. At the same time a friend of mine commissioned an art piece for one of her work colleagues, I had promised a family friend a wedding art gift and in the midst of all that I got a request from another friend to do a book cover (the original piece didn't work for him so I ended up sending him my sister's piece to use as a cover). So I wound up with a whirlwind of creative projects in June and July (I guess my muse decided to hammer me on the head since I kept ignoring her). Here are the fruits of my labour. I am quite pleased with my evolution as an artist and all the recipients loved their art pieces. It has been a busy but fruitful period. My goals for August are finding some balance, spending less time on currency trading and re-allocating time to my creative and online ventures.

Hakuna Matata: Double Meaning Quotes T-Shirts

I am an avid fan of quotes, blame it on my late father who was quite the collector of quote books. So for a while now I have been playing around with the idea of a quote website (I know it's overdone, hopefully I can do it differently). Quotes are a common thread in most of my online writing and I have also created a few art products featuring them. I am now moving onto a different line of quote products and will be opening a new Zazzle store debuting them. However, in the meantime here is a sample of one of my famous quotes t-shirts. It was inspired by my good friends Musonda and Andrew and a cool website they showed me called wordboner.com. My t-shirt features the African quote, "Hakuna Matata," which was made famous by "The Lion King," movie. Hakuna Matata, is a Swahili phrase which means "There are No problems or No Worries." My t-shirt has a double meaning which when read one way says, "Hakuna Matata meaning No Worries," and when read another way says ,"Kuna Matata meaning There are Problems." Birthday Wishes for My Mother

Today (April 10th) is my mother's birthday. My mother is a phenomenal woman who my father fondly referred to as "a woman of substance." I am blessed to have a mother who is one of my dearest friends and as an adult I have grown to appreciate the special bond that I have with her. If you follow my blog or read my articles you will most likely find a reference to her. Today in commemoration of her birthday I decided to post one of my very early art pieces, while it is a simple art piece I love it. I also have posted my favorite mother poem which I wrote last year and gave to her as a gift on Christmas Day (she was very pleased with the framed poetry poster and has hang it up in her bedroom). My mother has been my greatest supporter over the years including when I decided to become an artist (even after she spent years supporting my university education in totally different fields). I truly am blessed and thank God for the wonderful parents he gave me. Happy Birthday Mummy and God Bless You Always!

Sunrise Paintings: Metal Art Skyscapes

I recently got a commission from a friend to create a metal art card with a sunrise painting. Usually I do not paint skyscapes however, given that the request came from a friend I decided to take up the challenge. Little did I know how difficult it can be to re-create a realistic sunrise especially using acrylic paints on metal. This type of scene is more suited to pastels or oil on canvas media. I learnt a lot in the process and came up with three metal art paintings representing a sunrise over the ocean. I hope the special lady likes her gift and appreciates how fortunate she is to have such a loving man in her life. Been the incurable romantic I am the fact it was a romantic gift made up for all the sunrises I had to paint :-)

College Days and The African Thinker

This weekend I was invited to a farewell party for a lovely young lady who is flying off miles away for college. Having recalled my own college days (a looong time ago) in a foreign country I wanted to make a gift for her that would be unique and at the same time remind her of home. I was going for something intellectual but at the same time cool (since this is a teenager). I must confess it was somewhat of a challenge for me and having had a number of sleepless nights I ended up dozing off at my computer, when I woke up the image of Auguste Rodin's, Thinker came to my mind and I was like that's it! I will do a metal art card version of "The Thinker," with a graduation poem inside and a "cool" quote on the front. I also decided to use an earthy palette. I am glad to say she liked the art card! Quite an accomplishment pleasing a teen. I hope the words will carry her through her college years and I wish her much success and happiness as she embarks on this exciting new journey. At the same time that I was thinking of an art gift for Wendy I was mulling over what to make for a new friend who was nice enough to share with me some of his wisdom a few weeks ago. He was described to me as an, "artistic genius who is ahead of his time," and lest I embarrass him I will stop there. Anyway having met him and in line with the genius description I thought I would create a metal art, Africanized version of "The Thinker," for him. Since I was also told he used to have dreadlocks I titled the piece, "African Thinker/Maina with Dreadlocks." I am at the sketch stage, I still have to transfer it to metal and then decide on a paint color. I will add the pictures of the completed metal art piece once it is done. This is a collection of poems for mothers which are appropriate for any occasion including Mothers Day and Thanksgiving. My favorite is "Flowers for Mother: A Daughter's Wishes." Mothers give so much to their children and when we become adults we try our best to give back at least some of what they gave to us. I think the best gift a mother gives her child is unconditional love and support. My mother has loved and supported me throughout my life and I felt the least I could give back to her was the same, hence the words of the poem, "Flowers for Mother: A Daughters Wishes." SUNSET DREAMS
On the Brink of Womanhood
(Inspirational Life Poems for Women by Injete Chesoni)

She stands on the brink of womanhood
Staring into the sunset horizon
Pondering her future
Proudly staring it down
Convinced that she will make it
Although she has no clue how
She squares her shoulders
And resolutely raises her head
She holds her neck proudly
Staring defiantly ahead
She places her hands on her hips
And thrusts out her budding chest
Convinced that if she looks and acts tough
She will make it
Through the difficult days ahead
As the sun sets on the horizon
Her youthful days slowly go down
Buried along with the sinking sun
Tomorrow a new day will be born
And her life as a woman will start
In the gentle glow of dawn.

The inspirational poem above, "Sunset Dreams" was inspired by an African Art Metal Painting of a young woman that I completed in August. This life poem is part of my Women's Poetry Collection and deals with change and the difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood. On every Halloween
They come out in their ghostly sheen
Eerily dressed in silver white glows
Their faces masked in pale sorrow

They mourn and sway
And shriek the night away
Wailing because they cannot enjoy
the glories of day anymore
For they are ghostly souls
Doomed to glow
Only in the night

No longer for them
The pleasures of daylight
Their lot is cast
They are now creatures of fright
That pry this earth
In the darkness of night
Scaring all humankind.

And on Halloween
We mock their plight
As we dress up
And frolic in earthly delight
I am a ghost we say
With mock display
Dressed up in costumes
as we bob and sway

Nobel Peace Prize Poem: Human Race Embrace

President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today. I will leave it to others to debate whether or not Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. For me today’s Nobel announcement represented hope and in my Twitter comment I called it a "Nobel Prize of Hope." It represents hope on two levels. A sincere hope that President Barack Obama and other world leaders will pursue the peaceful resolution of conflicts rather than opting for war and a symbolism of what Barack Obama stands for Hope and Change. Barack Obama’s father is a native of my home country, Kenya, the home of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai who inspired me to write a poem on environmentalism. The poem in this blog post is inspired by the spirit of the Nobel Peace Prize and the art piece which I created prior to writing the poem. This peace poem, “Human Race Embrace” is about moving beyond divisiveness and racism and embracing each other as part of one human family. While it is a tremendous burden to put on one man’s shoulders may President Barack Obama live up to his name “Barack” which comes from “Baraka” the Swahili word for blessing and may he help bring about the blessing of peace in nations around the world. Two heads are better than one
So the saying goes
United we stand, divided we fall
We have been taught this lesson
Many times over
Embrace me my brother
So that we can stand tall
Let us join together
For as one we can conquer all

Let us join together in love
So that we may soar above
All of the challenges
that this human life brings
Together we can find
Heavenly wings
With which to fly
Beyond the confines
Of limited earth-bound thinking

Let us join together in
One human race embrace
Let us move beyond the color
Of our brother’s face
The limits and confines of race
As a measure of who we choose to embrace
For at the root of it we are all one
A multi-colored family of man
And together “Yes We Can,”
Improve this world for all of its earthly sons
So let us join our hearts and our minds
In one peaceful unified
Brotherly Embrace
for the benefit of all mankind.

A Pot of Love and A Mother's Pride
A Narrative Poem About Mothers Love

In our kitchen above the stove
Sits a pot my mother calls love
It’s a strange little pot you see
Decorated with eyes that always watch me
Much like my mother’s eyes follow me

One day I decided to ask my mother the story
that lay behind her little pot of mystery
She sat at the kitchen table
And took me up on her knee
Then began to tell me the pot’s history

When I was a young woman
A little older than you
My mother came home
With a package wrapped in blue
She called me into the kitchen
And gazed down at me
Then handed me the package
much to my glee
I tore off the blue wrapper
expecting to find
Baubles or jewels of some kind
Instead what I found
Was a pot drawn with eyes all around

My mother sensing my dismay
As I put the odd little pot away
Smiled her gentle smile
And said in her loving way
I know you don’t understand this gift my child
But you will one day
And on that strange note she rose
and strode over to the stove
To begin cooking our supper

I stomped out of the kitchen with my odd little pot
And tossed it in the corner wishing it would rot
Many years later after my mother died
Is when I finally realized
That the pot was her way of letting me know
She would always be watching over me
with a loving glow
Stored in the eyes of the pot
that she gave me so long ago.

I looked up at my mother as
tears rolled down her face.
That’s the end of the story she said.
I reached for the pot
And caught her teardrops
As they slowly slid off her face
And for the first time that night
I saw the pot with different eyes
It was a pot of love and a mother’s pride.

Life Poems, Immigration Stories, Books and Poems: Immigrant Dreams

A life poem that I wrote, titled Immigrant Dreams has been published by Eye On Life web magazine. "Immigrant dreams," deals with the reasons that people migrate and the problems immigrants face in their new host countries. Majority of immigrants migrate in the hopes of improving their economic status and providing their children and themselves with a better future. Other immigrants are driven from their home countries by war or numerous other reasons. While my own migrant experience was pleasant, as part of the modern African Diaspora I observed common immigration problems, such as highly educated people been forced to work menial jobs due to their immigrant status. I also was confronted by the alienation that some immigrants deal with. However, not all immigrant stories are sad and there are many for whom the immigrant dream has been fulfilled. For those who have not yet achieved their dreams and who are struggling in foreign lands it is my hope that they will one day achieve what they have sacrificed so much for, whether it be in their homelands or on foreign shores. I am back home in Kenya now and loving it, and what I have found is that problems and opportunities abound in every land, they just wear different faces. Life is what you make it. Healing Rain

I thought my tears would make you love me again,
I thought my tears would fall on the roots of our love
and nourish it like rain.
I thought my tears would pierce your heart,
and help us to make a brand new start.

I thought my tears would make you feel my anguish and pain,
and draw you back into my arms again.
I thought my tears would flow with yours
and create for us a pool of love.
I thought my tears were heavenly showers
with magical healing powers.
A trickling sent from the heavens above,
That would fill our hearts with joy and love.

So I cried when you left me
To ease my pain,
I cried when you left me
To bring you back into my arms again,
I cried when you left me,
Because I thought that tears were healing rain.
But I found out that sometimes they are not,
They are just tears and searing pain.

I Know I Will Love Again:
A Love Break-up Poem by Injete Chesoni

When you left me,
My heart shattered into a million little pieces,
My life crumbled under your feet.
As you walked out that door,
You took my soul with you,
Onto that old cobbled street.

At first I could not accept it,
There was no way that you were gone.
I played this song over and over,
Tomorrow he will come back home.
And tomorrow turned into a million yesterdays,
As my life slowly wilted away,
I became a drooping flower,
Thirsting every day.

But still I could find no water,
For my source it was only one.
And it dried up forever for me,
when your love became undone.
I thought I would die without you,
And I slowly counted the days,
When I would meet my savior,
In a loveless haze.

But the days turned into years,
And still I was on this earth.
Nobody came to save me,
From my loveless hearth.

Then one day I finally realized,
That you were never coming back again,
And as long as I kept hoping for you,
My heart would be in pain.
A broken heart shattered in pieces,
Can never love again.

So I opened up my door,
And I stepped gingerly onto that old street,

Memorial Poems and Gifts: Remembering Dad

I originally wrote this memorial poem in August of this year. It was inspired by an abstract metal painting that I did in June. The original poem written in August was not intended as a memorial or death poem. Then today as I got ready to post the original poem and metal art work I realized that it was September 5th, the anniversary of my father's death. Call it coincidence if you wish, but I do not believe in coincidences. I decided to edit the original poem and write a memorial death poem for my father. My intention in writing this memorial poem was to remember my father and at the same time bring comfort to others who are grieving the loss of a loved one. I hope this memorial death poem brings comfort to those of you who have lost loved ones. You can read more memorial death poems here and inspirational death quotes here. This memorial poem, “My Fathers Mask: Death the Journey Home,” is dedicated to my dear father, the late Chief Justice Z.R. Chesoni, who passed away on September 5th, 1999. He was a special man and the best father that a child could hope for. He did not have a mask in his study but he had lots and lots of books. He loved to read and he loved to learn and he passed this love for the written word on to all of us. He always said knowledge was the one thing that nobody could take away from you. One of his favorite poets and authors was Shakespeare, whom he quoted often. My father’s favorite poems included "Don’t Quit" and "Rudyard Kipling’s, If" two inspirational poems that always motivate and comfort me. Rest in Peace, Papa. I know that you are always smiling down on us and watching over us.

My father has a mask

That hangs up in his study,
It is bronze and earthy,
With scary eyes.
It has a surprised mouth,
that holds the key
to some deep and dark mystery.

One day long ago
I asked him,
What deep dark secrets he hid,
In that strange mask
That hung up in his study.

Is it the key to your secrets
that you never told mother and I?
Or is it the key to your heart
where your love for us lies?
No, he told me with a serious
far away look in his eyes,
It is the key to my homeland,
that I left a long time ago,
It reminds me of where I came from,
And where I shall go.

I regarded him quizzically,
For it was unusual for him
to be so full of mystery.
Father of what are you talking?
And he snapped out of his reverie.
Never mind my dear,
he said placatingly.
I will tell you when you are old
enough to understand,
the stories about my homeland,
and its deep mystery.

When you go there will you take us with you I pled,
He looked at me gravely and shook his head,
Each one must make their own journey my dear,
But there will always be a home there for you so never fear.

Now my father has gone to his home,
He is no longer with us
But I know that I am not alone.
I look up at the mask that hangs in his study,
And I know that he is watching over me.
I remember those words that he said a long time ago
And they bring me comfort and ease my sorrow.
There will always be a home for you my dear
So let your heart rest easy and never ever fear.

The art piece used for this poem is part of my Metal African Art Masks collection and the poem is part of my African Poetry series. The inspiration for this poem was drawn from an African painting of a female figure mask. When I did this embossed metal painting I had no idea what it would turn out to be I just knew that I wanted it to have the appearance of an African mask and a female figure. The markings and details were added later as the art piece took shape. Once the art piece was complete it looked to me like a woman with her shoulders weighed down hence the title and subject of this African poem, that I named, "Mother Africa: The Weight of the World on Her Shoulders."

The world is on her shoulders,
The burden weighs her down,
She has borne many children,
Scattered around this world.
Her sweat has watered this earth,
Many times over,
And it continues to drip,
even as her children cry in hunger.
The fruits of her labor,
Seep through the ground,
Bleeding out from her,
To feed a hungry world.
She is a beast of burden,
Born to serve this earth,
Her life was written
for her,
before she was ever birthed.
Her teardrops
feed and nurture,
The parched earth beneath her feet,
She cannot stop crying,
for her tears ensure she lives.

This is one of the very first metal art work pieces that I did. It is a brightly colored African art painting on metal and features a partially nude female in African dress. It was inspired by a beautiful nude art photograph of an African woman. This piece allows me to combine two of my artistic passions creating metal art work and painting female nudes. Like most artists I love painting the nude female figure. I have noticed it is relatively difficult to find fine art nude paintings featuring black or African women. I therefore decided to create some. I hope you will enjoy them. The art piece below pre-dates my metal art work and is an oil pastel art piece of a red haired nude. I love this piece too.

A Short Love Story by Injete Chesoni

Her re-awakening began with a splash of red nail polish on her toes. After painting her toes, she went over to her wardrobe. So many beautiful clothes that she had not worn for months. She pushed through the hangers until she found the red dress that she was searching for. She slipped it over her head, it still fit her though not as snugly as it used to. She went over to her dressing table mirror and unpinned her long black hair. Today she was going to let her hair swing wild and free, in line with her new-found freedom. She rummaged through her dressing table drawers searching for her favorite red lipstick. After applying it she slipped it into the evening bag sitting atop the dressing table, then went over to her shoe closet and slipped on her favorite strappy black heels. She gave herself one last look in the mirror and was satisfied with what she saw, she looked sexy and stunning. She wasn’t going to wear any of her expensive jewelry tonight. The jewels were just weighty painful reminders of a life that she was leaving behind.

She grabbed her purse off the dressing table and went down the grand staircase into the foyer. She rummaged through the hall table for her keys and slammed out of the front door locking it behind her. She got into her sky blue Benz and drove off. She had already decided she would go to, “The Palisades” a trendy new club where all the young socialites hung out. It was on the other side of town so it was unlikely any of her usual crowd would be there. When she walked into the club heads turned, she walked over to the bar used to the stares. She still had her model good looks and body so stares were nothing new to her. She swung her lithe body onto a bar stool and crossed her long sexy legs. Smiling at the bartender she ordered her favorite drink, a mojito. Then swung around and slowly surveyed the crowd. She noticed the interested stares of many men but none caught her fancy. She did not see the handsome dark haired man in the corner staring at her.

Mike had noticed her the moment she walked through the door, she was new here. He certainly would have noticed her if she had been here before. She definitely wasn’t one of his regulars. She was beautiful but that wasn’t what held his attention, after all the club was full of beautiful women. It was the air of mystery about her. He walked over to her.

As Marie looked up from her drink she noticed a tall, dark handsome man walking towards her. Hmmm, he looked interesting. He would do for the night she figured. Tall, well-built, dark and handsome just the way she liked them. He looked rich too, but that was no longer of much consequence to her. She smiled seductively and he smiled back. He had a slow, sexy smile. He slid onto the bar stool beside her.
“Hi there, can I offer you a drink?”
He had a nice voice too, a deep rich baritone, smooth and sexy.
She raised her glass and smiled that seductive smile again, “Can I buy you a drink?”
Mike chuckled this woman was definitely different. He liked that.
“No thank-you,” he said, “I never let a lady pay.”
She raised her eyebrows, “Really, well I have learnt never to let a man pay.”
Mike gave her a puzzled look but decided to let the comment drop.
“You are new here, I haven’t seen you before,” he said.
“So you are a regular here,” she said not answering his question.
“Actually, yes, I own the club so I am here every night.” She must be new in town since everyone knew he owned, The Palisades.
Marie realized how out of the loop she was, there was a time when she knew all of the hotshot businessmen and socialites.
“Good for you,” she smiled raising her glass again.
Unlike most women she seemed un-impressed. He liked that too.
“So what brings you here?”
“Oh I just wanted a night out on the town.”
“Well I am glad you chose my club, I hope you enjoy yourself.”
“Oh I am already,” she said smiling up at him.
His phone rang.
“Sorry, excuse me.” He picked it up and walked off to a private area behind the bar. She watched him as he walked away. Hmm, he had a nice backside too. But she wondered if she could really take him home with her. He must be busy if he was the club owner. But he definitely seemed interested in her and she had no doubts in her feminine wiles. Mike finished his conversation and came back over to join her.
“Sorry about that.”
“No problem, you must be a very busy man owning a hot new club like this one.”
“Well yes and no, I have learnt to delegate and hire the right people to run my businesses. When I was younger I tried to do it all by myself and after burning out I learnt how to find a balance.”
“Impressive, not many businessmen learn how to do that.”
“You seem to know a lot about businessmen.”
She smiled mysteriously and didn’t respond to that. He was quickly learning she only answered what she wanted to.
“So are you from around here,” he asked.
“Not quite, I live about an hour away.”
“That’s a long drive for a night out on the town.”
“I enjoy driving and I wanted a change of scene.”
He found something odd about that but let it drop.
“Well I hope it’s worth your while,” he said.
“It already is,” she replied smiling.
She had an enchanting smile and he caught himself staring at her which only made her smile more.
“So would you like to dance?” he asked.
“Sure,” she said and slid off her stool. He took her arm and led her to the dance floor.
As he pulled her into an embrace she felt an electric jolt go through her and stiffened automatically, startled by the strong sexual chemistry between them. She had never had such a strong sexual response to a man before. Or maybe it was because she hadn’t been sexually involved with a man in a long time.
“Is everything alright,” he asked concerned. He had felt it too but he knew how to play cool and calm.
“Yyyes,” she stammered. Uneasy for the first time since she had met him.
“Just relax,” he said stroking her back, which did anything but relax her. She was meant to be a sophisticated lady not someone unaccustomed to a man’s touch so she let her body relax into his and rested her head on his shoulder.
He was not sure he could control the heady effect her soft body was having on him. They would definitely have to end this dance soon if he didn’t want to embarrass himself. As the song came to an end he led her back to the bar. At that moment Tony his DJ decided to have a little fun with his boss and slipped on Lady in Red, by Chris de Burgh.
“I love this song,” she said looking up at him. Oh great, there was no way he was going to escape going back to the dance floor, and he would have to hold her close for this slow romantic song. This time she put her arms around his neck and pressed herself up against him. More brazen than before. As they danced she could tell he was aroused and it excited her. She was determined to drive this cool executive out of control. She moved sensuously against him and closed her eyes.
By this point Mike had given up trying to stay in control.
“Would you like to come home with me,” she whispered in his ear.
Mike was taken aback she had definitely turned the tables on him, but there was no way he could refuse, she aroused him and intrigued him. He smiled and responded by claiming her lips in a passionate kiss. Then raised his head and smiled at her dazed expression.
“Sure let’s go,” he said in that deep rich baritone voice.
She was taken aback for a moment but quickly regained her composure.
She smiled up at him, “Your place or mine,” she said in a husky seductive voice.
“I think we better go to my place, yours is an hour away and I can’t wait that long,” he said with his own seductive smile.
He took her hand and led her off the dance floor and out of the club. When they got to the black Jaguar parked outside the club’s front door he helped her in. He couldn’t drive fast enough, thank goodness his penthouse was ten minutes away. On the drive down she was excited and apprehensive. Would he be able to tell she hadn’t slept with a man in a long time. Of course not, there was no way he could know. Who cared anyway, she wanted him and he wanted her and that’s all that mattered wasn’t it?
He swung his car into the parking lot and helped her out. Once they got into the elevator he pulled her up against him and kissed her passionately running his hands down her back and cupping her to him.
“Do you intend to take me in the elevator,” she said breathlessly.
He smiled roguishly, “That’s a thought.”
At that moment the elevator door opened and he pulled her to his front door. He kicked the door shut behind him and pressed her against the foyer wall kissing her hard. Wow, this woman was hot. Tempting as it was to do it in the foyer he wanted her in his bedroom so that he could ravish her for the rest of the night. He led her to the bedroom and pushed her onto his bed. She started tearing at his shirt and pants. This woman seemed to constantly be one step ahead of him.

Marie was surprised at herself. She had never behaved so wantonly before. Not even with Mark in the early days. She looked over at the man sleeping beside her and realized she hadn’t even asked him his name. What had gotten into her today? This was meant to be her wild re-awakening but had she gone over the top? Having a one-night stand with a man whose name she didn’t even know, and to make matters worse she had left her car at the club so she couldn’t even creep out of his house. Things were not quite going according to plan.
Mike noticed her stirring beside him.
He put his arm around her, “Is everything okay,” he asked.
She tried to smile but didn’t quite succeed. “Please could you take me back to the club, I need to get my car and go home.”
Mike was startled and offended. He thought she had enjoyed it as much as him, she couldn’t possibly want to go home. He masked his thoughts and said coolly, “Sure if that’s what you want.” He slid off the bed and began putting on his clothes.
She couldn’t bring herself to look at him. Mike was wondering what had happened to the sophisticated woman who had seduced him and asked him to go home with her. Women, strange creatures, he thought. She had seemed certain of herself and he thought she was as into him as he was into her but it looked like he was wrong.
They drove back to the club in silence.
“I will follow you home,” he said.
“No,” she said in a panicked voice. Then in a calmer voice she added, “that won’t be necessary.”
“Don’t worry I am not a stalker, I just want to make sure you get home safely,” he said sarcastically. The night really was not turning out well.
“I would rather you don’t, give me your phone number and I will call you to let you know when I get home.”
He would rather have seen her home but didn’t want to get into a fight.
“Alright,” he said, realizing he hadn’t even asked her name, she really had blown him away. He scribbled his personal cell phone number on the back of his business card and handed it to her.
She took the card hastily, she couldn’t wait to get away. “Alright bye,” she said, and hurriedly got into her car speeding off. Mike stared after her. For some reason he felt used. He shook his head and walked over to his car getting in slowly. He drove back home. What a night it had been.

Marie sped all the way home as if the hounds of hell were after her. She couldn’t believe she had done this. Yes, she had left home intending to do it but she still couldn’t believe she had carried it out. She thought she would feel elated but she just felt empty and guilty and she wasn’t sure why. Who felt guilty after carrying out a revenge plot? Only sentimental wimps like her. She sped into the driveway and her mouth dropped open. This was the last thing she needed right now. Parked in the driveway, with the engine still running, was her husband Mark’s Porsche. He had come home three days early! This really was not going according to plan. It was meant to have been full of drama and fanfare. Well there was still time to change the plot.

Mark stared in surprise at his wife as she stepped out of her car. She looked stunning like she used to when they first met. Maybe if she hadn’t let herself go he wouldn’t have cheated on her with Marcia her beautiful, best friend. He wondered where she was coming from all dolled up at this hour of the night. Maybe she had decided to start partying again. That was a good sign wasn’t it? Maybe she was ready to forgive him and return to their former socialite ways.

She walked past him. “We need to talk,” she said abruptly. Mark had grown accustomed to that cold tone and reception and he was getting tired of it.
“Alright,” he said resignedly and followed her into the house.
She went up to their bedroom and opened her jewelry box, and for the first time he noticed that she wasn’t decked in her usual expensive jewels. He thought that odd. She had always loved wearing jewelry. She snapped the jewelry box open and that’s when he noticed she wasn’t wearing her wedding band or engagement ring. She took them out and handed them to Mark. “It’s over,” she said, as he looked at her in surprise.
Before he could answer she turned around and run out of the bedroom and down the stairs. He run after her calling out her name, but she just jumped in her car and sped off. He stood there and watched her go.

Marie, kept driving until she got to Mike’s apartment. She pulled up outside his apartment complex and dialed the number he had given her.
“Can I come in,” she asked.

(A Short Love Story Poem by Injete Chesoni)

It began the way most love affairs begin
with a sweet lover’s voyage.
Making love to you was pure magic
And it formed for me a mirage.

We were totally in love
or at least I thought we were,
Until you left my heart with a gushing scar,
When that seductress cast her spell on you.
In an instant
you were gone from me
And I became nothing but a distant
memory.

You were my life’s blood
But for her you were nothing but a one-night stand.
I wish I was like her a goddess of passion and heat,
and I could leave men crawling at my feet.
I would like to leave you in embers and searing pain,
and break your heart the way you broke mine again and again.

We were so loving together
Two birds of a feather,
Taking flight on the wings of love.
But now it seems that we will never, ever
love each other again.
Because you left me for the arms of another
And I never ever want to see you again.
How can love so easily turn into hate and pain?

Then just as I thought I was over you,
we met on the beach
one warm and sunny summer's day.
One thing led to another
and we were back in love again.
It was kisses and flowers
and your sweet I love you game.
I guess I had never really fallen out of love with you
And my hate for you
turned back into love again.

We were back to been two soul mates together,
dancing the dance of love,
forever and ever
or so I thought,
but I was wrong again.
Something happened and off you went
Into the arms of another,
It seems you can never stop playing love's game.

This time I was once bitten and twice shy
and so I let you go
I vowed I would get over you
although I had no clue how.

So I did what people have done
countless times before,
and tossed myself into the arms of another
to forget my sorrow.
It worked remarkably well,
or so it seemed,
until he got serious
and went down on one knee.
Now here I am the night before my wedding
wondering is this really me?
I thought it would be you and me
But now it’s me and he.
And the seed of you and I's love
is growing inside of me.

Prologue: Swept Away
One gaze, and her mind was in a haze.
Those eyes, they took her by surprise.
When hers met his.
She had no clue, if only she knew,
it was the beginning of the end.
She never would have let him inside
her heart or head.

Chapter I: The Beginning of a Torrid Love Affair
It began the way most love affairs begin with a sweet lovers voyage.

The voyage started off calm and peaceful
And gently we drifted along
As we sailed further out
A storm started brewing
And rapidly we lost all control

Swept by the waves of passion
We were helpless in the storm
Two self-less bodies together
Making a new form

When the storm was over
We gently drifted apart
And then we came back together
Joined at the heart

Chapter II: Temptation and Infidelity
Making love to you was pure magic, and it formed for me a mirage. We were totally in love, or at least I thought we were, until you left my heart with a gushing scar. When that seductress cast her spell on you, you were gone from me in an instant. And I became nothing but a distant memory.

Her hair enticed you
Her hips seduced you.
Her backside confused you.
Her sway drew you.

the flames licked your body.

you were left a pile of ash.

Chapter III: The Seductress Left You With A Broken Heart

You were my life’s blood, But for her you were nothing but a one-night stand. She was just a promiscuous girl, out to have fun and you fell under her spell.

Dear Lord,
Protect the hearts and souls of all men
in her snare.

That lead to gulfs of separation
which cannot be sealed
Even by the glue of our love for each other.

Chapter V: Love Rekindled on A Warm, Sunny Summer's Day
Seasons came and went, Then just as I thought I was over you, we met on the beach one warm and sunny summer's day. One thing led to another and we were back in love again.

Sunsets and blue skies
And your eyes
Gazing into mine

I am remembering
Gentle warm breezes
And sweet kisses
As your lips met mine

I am remembering
The sound of ocean waves
As you whispered sweet nothings
Into my ears

Pitch black nights and starry skies
And your soft sighs
As your thighs met mine

Chapter VI: Love's Game
It was back to kisses and flowers and your sweet I love you game. I guess I had never really fallen out of love with you, And my hate for you turned back into love again. We were back to been two soul mates together, Birds of a feather dancing the dance of love, forever and ever.

Chapter VII: But You Can't Stop Playing Love's Game
Or so I thought, but I was wrong again. Something happened and off you went, Into the arms of another, it seems you can never stop playing love's game. This time I was once bitten and twice shy, and so I let you go. I vowed I would get over you, although I had no clue how.

Chapter VIII: Love on the Rebound

So I did what people have done countless times before, and tossed myself into the arms of another to forget my sorrow. It worked remarkably well, or so it seemed, until he got serious and went down on one knee. And now here I am the night before my wedding, wondering is this really me?

Chapter IX: The Final Chapter

I thought it would be you and me, But now it’s me
and he. And the seed of you and I's love is growing inside of me.

I sit here knowing, that I am a step away
from changing my life forever.
I ask myself am I ready,
to leave all that I have known behind,
and forge into the future.
I ask am I ready,
to throw all caution to the wind,
and entwine my life so closely with that of another.
I begin to hesitate
and on the eve of change,
I want to hold time still for a moment.
I cannot go back, but I am so afraid to go forward.
Yet, I know that time will not wait for me.
And on the eve of change I realize
I must move forward with time,
or time will leave me behind.
